Hiashatar

Hiashatar, or bodyguard shatar (Hia being the bodyguard) is a traditional game of Mongolia.  It is a large variant of Shatar adding a new piece type and making the board 10X10.

The Hia is an interesting piece that can protect the king from one space away.  So for example, if a teme (bishop) had the noyon (king) in check, but a bodyguard was within one space, it would not count as check.  Also if that teme came to attack it would be stopped in its tracks one space away from the noyon (that's why it didn't count as check before).

- I've heard traditionally some of the rules for this shatar variant also had different rules and possibly piece movement, but was influenced by Chess.  I hope to find more info about any old rules there might have been.

- I think this game really deserves more attention.

- I will put together a  rule booklet for download soonish.
