禽将棋 Tori-Shogi

Tori Shogi is a small Shogi variant created in the late 1700s.  It has a bird theme, tori means bird, in which all the pieces are named after birds.

鵬 - Pheonix, or a magical Chinese bird, Peng, that can transform into a large fish.

鷹 - Hawk, or Falcon.

鵰 - A rare kanji in Japanese, in Chinese it means Eagle or Vulture

鶴 - Crane

雉 - Pheasant

鶉 - Quail (the left and right pieces have mirrored moves)

燕 - Swallow

鴈 - Wild Goose

- Many of the pieces have unique interesting moves.

- The close proximity and small 7x7 board give a quick violent start to the game.

- One of the only old Shogi variants to have the drop rule.

A commissioned board and pieces by me.  Its a 1.6sun tabletop board with pads on the bottom.  Made from "shin-kaya" otherwise known as fake kaya.  Pretty much any wood that kinda looks like kaya wood. Very pretty grain and a good heft to it.
